Marijke and I went to our first significant event since the Before Times – before covid hijacked the world. My daughter was pretty stoked to attend the game in BC Place in Vancouver to watch the BC Lions host the Calgary Stampeders. It felt surreal getting on the Skytrain and riding with all the masked people in an enclosed tube. It was strange being out of our bubble and away from home.  The fear of the early days of the Read more…

November 11, 2021 Lest We Forget

John stood in the bow of the landing craft. His last two years of training had led him to this day. His nerves were raw and he could almost hear the beat of his own heart above the roar of the engines.  “Ready gents! We will be hitting the shore in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5…” His sargent’s voice was drowned out by the sudden barrage of gunfire that laced the air.  It felt so unreal.  But the reality Read more…

November 8, 2021 Border opened

Jack sat at the wheel of his motorhome and waited. Time passed slowly, moments ticked away. After eighteen months Jack struggled to remain patient. The border was going to be opened to him and his wife. Their son waited in California with his young family. Finally, their family could be reunited.  “Jack I can hardly wait to see my grandson… to hold him.” Nancy’s hand vibrated as she opened her purse and checked her paperwork. She pulled out their passports Read more…

November 7, 2021 Time

Time. For all of human history, people have been trying to determine the exact nature of time. No matter what, we can’t stop the passage of it. For the past hundred or so years we have tried by setting out clocks back one hour. Why? Some people blame the farmers for wanting a later sunrise. But farmers don’t like Daylight Savings Time. So why do we continue to change our clocks twice a year?  It all started in World War Read more…

The old man couldn’t believe his eyes. The creature walking up the front drive was terrifying, it was covered in rags. And blood. The man stood there and held his breath. What was this phantom he was watching stagger toward him? Across the street, he saw another sight that chilled his bones and froze his mind. It was a witch and a goblin running down the street. She was chasing the green long-eared creature down the road, a cackling laugh Read more…

October 27, 2021

John looked at the restaurant as he drove past. He remembered times from not so long ago when he could just walk into the entrance, sit down and grab a cold beer with his buddy. That was before this whole pandemic thing blew up. Now he is one of those that have been told to stay away, he’s not safe. No passport, no beer. He isn’t ready for the vaccine.  One day he thinks he will get it, maybe. But he Read more…

A Sonnet For a Fish

From the depths comes the one he seeks It is pulling, turning, diving in resistance Above the surface it turns and peaks Reeling faster he narrows the distance It swims away and out screams the line Pulling harder now he reels in his prize He stretches and cranks in search of a sign He reefs harder reeling and feeling its size In the distance he sees it leap From the depths to the surface He hopes it is the one Read more…

October 25, 2021

Rain has soaked our world the last month as if mother nature is trying to even things out for the intense heat of this past summer.  I drove along the wet pavement and headed to the store for some supplies for our cats, Gabby and Snowbee. In an instant he was there, running in front of my car. I didn’t have time to brake. It was a sickening sound I heard when my tire hit his little body. In all Read more…

Oct 23 2021

They announced the lifting of some restrictions in our province this week. As of Oct 25, there will no longer be restrictions on the capacity for any indoor events in BC – mostly, sort of. In the north and parts of interior health and Frasier health regions, they have kept restrictions in place where vaccination rates are low. Why do we still have to wear masks indoors then?  I am so confused. And that is the problem and the reason Read more…

October 21, 2021 Plastic Wars

Plastic waste floats across our oceans and fills beaches and valleys throughout Asia and the world. We have been told for decades to recycle plastic, that it is environmentally friendly. They have put labels on our plastic containers and told us that this was good, we were helping. They Lied. After over forty years of increased use of plastics, the truth is finally coming to light. Only ten percent of the so-called recycled plastic in the world actually gets recycled. Read more…
