December 31, 2021 Goodbye 2021

The lights danced in the sky. Above our heads little beacons of colour formed shapes over the glittering water of the Sea of Cortez. It was a spectacular end to a year that most of us would sooner forget.

Goodbye, 2021.

And good riddance.

Here’s to a new beginning and a new year. Happy New Year to everyone.

I felt so lucky to be on the beach in Cabo San Lucas for the end of what has been one of the most tumultuous years of my life. And I am one of the lucky ones. So many people have suffered so much in the past twelve months. Covid ransacked our world and the climate didn’t do us any favours either.

What a great way to end the year. We sat on the beach and watched fireworks light the sky. After the first barrage of pyrotechnics ended they launched a series of drones that played in the darkness. It was pretty cool watching them from below, I know it was even better from a distance. Shapes of light sparkled in the sky over the entrance to the marina at Cabo. The drones flew in formation creating different figures like a whale, marlin, and the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas.

And to think we almost didn’t come.

Looking into the sky with my wife and daughter our decision to push through and go to Mexico was validated. We would have totally regretted staying in the snowy climes of Canada instead of fleeing south to celebrate New Year with my family. My daughter turns sixteen in less than two weeks and I am so happy to have created memories that she can take with her till the end of her days. Long after I am gone and this viral infection is over my daughter will be able to look back at a night on the beach. A night when she watched the sky sparkle and the lights dance.

Isn’t that what life is about? Creating memories…

We wandered the streets of Cabo and saw the energy flow. We felt the vibe, the excitement in the air. In those moments we forgot all the problems of the last year. The fires and flood, the disease and strife. All of it was gone for that one night of celebration.

Here’s to hoping 2022 will be better than the last two years before. I know the way we started it was the best we could have hoped for.

Happy New Year!
