May 9, 2021 Mothers Day

Published by Victor Barr on

Mom stood at the door and stared longingly at her daughter. The little girl was no longer a small bundle of joy and excitement. She was now a blooming teenager filled with emotions and turmoil.

Where has the time gone?

It seemed like only yesterday mom was holding her little girl to her bosom, nurturing the tiny precious baby. Then in a flash, the two of them were sitting together holding hands and playing with dolls.

She will never forget the day her child went to school for the first time. The fear, anticipation, and joy wrapped her heart in a velvet glove and held her in its grasp. She was so afraid to let go, yet knew in her heart she had no choice.

Then came the day she fell and cut her lip. Six stitches they told her, she wanted to scream and yell at them. How could they risk her baby girl on the balance beam? At that moment she knew she could not always protect her. It would be the first of many falls to help pick her baby up from.

There was the first day in a new school. Her kid was so excited to see the big brand new building. it was an adventure and she shared her daughter’s anticipation. She will never forget the pride she felt watching her girl on the stage in her first school play.

Why did time have to rush by so fast? Her pride and joy no longer wanted to be in the school play. She has grown into other interests and dreams. A tear of sorrow and joy cracked her eye as she thought of all those days gone by.

A whirlwind of memories danced in the mother’s mind. Her little girl coming home with her first boyfriend. The tears and angst over the first break-up.. How she wished she could protect her baby girl from all the pain life has in store for her. At last, she realized there is no bubble wrap big enough to keep the pain away.

Now she is a baby no more. Mom can’t protect her from all the pitfalls of life – dangers that didn’t exist when she was young are now hovering in the digital universe. Add to that a global pandemic and mom feels lost and afraid of what tomorrow will bring her little girl. Mom reached out to her grown daughter and held her arms wide. She longed for the simpler times when all she had to protect her from were scraped knees and a busted lip. Mom knows she can no longer protect her.

All mom can do now is guide her into becoming the beautiful woman she is blossoming into.

She smiled wide as her daughter returned the hug and said the words she longed to hear.

“I love you, mom.”
