March 4, 22 Lets Dance

Published by Victor Barr on

Two years ago we stood in the Happy Valley Day Lodge at Big White Ski Resort and swayed to the music.  I held my honey tight as Jon Bos strummed the notes to the song Thank You by Led Zeppelin.

We’d heard about this dreaded coronavirus that was spreading throughout much of the world. It all seemed so far away as we danced to the wonderful rhythms of our wedding song.

Things had already started to feel a little strange. A new virus started in China and was spreading across the globe. Italy reported an overloaded health care system and many, many deaths. The World Healthcare Organization was warning everyone about this oncoming pandemic.

In our little bubble in Big White, we were oblivious to the changes our world was about to face. We could not know then it would be two years before we were allowed to dance in a bar again.

How could we know what the next two years would bring? We were just dancing in our own world.

Today, my wife and I danced again. Jon Bos lit the Globe Tapa’s Bar with a musical energy that connected everyone. Restrictions on dancing and mingling in the bars were removed in B.C. only a few days before.

Musical energy filled the room as Jon played his heart out to the people in front of him. There was a rhythmic fuel being fed by the guitarists dancing fingers.

It was waiting for a spark to ignite it.

“I already know what my last song is. What should my second last one be?” Perspiration beaded Jon’s brow as he asked the audience for a request.

Our eyes met and we both smiled, “Thank You!” I called out.

Jon grinned wide and nodded his head. The first notes of Les Zep’s iconic song leapt forth from his fingers and grabbed my soul. I turned and grabbed my wife.

We were dancing again!

It felt good, it felt right.

We danced at the front of the room oblivious to everything but each other and the words to the song. Ok, not quite oblivious, it was a strange feeling to be dancing with our masks on. My mask is the scary clown Penney Wise from the movie It. It was a crazy smile for crazy times.

Underneath I was beaming with a wide smile as we danced.

Jon ended his serenade and began his final tune of the evening – All Summer Long by Kid Rock.

The dam had burst.

People grabbed each other’s hands and joined us on the dance floor. Everyone connected with a passion we haven’t felt in two long years. Jon beamed and fed off the energy of the room. It was a connection that lifted the dancing souls vibrating to the song.

We all sang along and celebrated a new day.

And we all danced.
