Monday March 15

Published by Victor Barr on

It has been a year of Mondays. Every week has begun with another Monday in the coronaverse. You may ask yourself, why do I pick on Mondays?. Every time it’s a Monday I can’t help but sing the Boomtown Rats song in my head, “I don’t like Mondays.”

Mondays can certainly be a drag, with having to go back to work after a weekend of fun and relaxation. Monday has its own degree of negativity; waiting for Monday to end and the week to begin. When I was a boss of employees Monday was always a little dicey as to how many would call in with the 26-ounce flu.

If only that was our biggest problem these days.

One year ago it was a Monday like many others. We started our work week. I was lucky enough to be at Big White Ski Resort. St Patrick’s day was the next day and we were excited to celebrate with a cold green beer. We knew there was this pandemic going on. It wasn’t our pandemic, it was in another world.

Until it wasn’t.

Suddenly it was becoming a big deal. The weekend had just passed and watching Jon Bos in Happy Valley was a little stranger than normal. Tables were limited, the menu and how it was served, changed in the middle of the day. Suddenly the buffet disappeared. People were being told to social distance. Cough in your sleeve, don’t touch your face. Don’t touch anything and then lick your hands. Basic hygiene protocols suddenly became very important. Fear of some unknown virus named after a beer was taking over the news and the coffee shops.

They closed Whistler on Saturday, they wouldn’t close Big White? They couldn’t…

Could they? They did.

Big White sent an email out to its season pass holders and businesses. At 2:45 in the afternoon on Monday, March 16, effective immediately the resort would close for the season.

Tomorrow, when we drive to the hill, it will have stayed open longer than last season. Every day after that is a bonus.

At least they opened the ski hills this year, in some European countries the ski season is still waiting for next year. Without the joy of sliding through fresh powder snow and over crisp groomed slopes, this would have been a very long and dreary winter. With just less than a month to go, it’s time to get back up into our mountain paradise and make the most of the time we have.

There is a muted feeling of optimism in the air. Spring is in bloom in the valley bottom and the slopes are lit up with long days and creamy runs. I think by next year we should be able to gather again, to travel again, to sing again.

As long as enough people take the vaccine.

This Monday in the coronaverse slides quietly by. I hope your Monday was a good one, filled with love and positivity. Being positive in our mind and negative in the lab is the best way to defeat this pandemic that has taken over our lives for the past year.

We must keep our eye on the prize and focus on staying safe. One year in and the end is in sight.
