Morning came early today; again. I would like to be a morning person, I am just not very good at it. I picked up the engineer and we grabbed a coffee.

Today we went to work in Ktown, we needed to get a good start; the engineer had a plane to catch. We stepped out onto the roof and were greeted with a wall of heat. The roof was basking in Okanagan sunshine and the heat of the summer sun was baking the rubber membrane roof. My friend from Alberta was ill-prepared for such warmth and peeled a layer in the first seconds of exposure to the sun. He turned and stared at the scene in front of him and paused. I smiled and suggested a boat ride may be a far better way to spend the morning in the Okanagan. He laughed back, that would have to be another trip.

Our day involved going through someone’s apartment in a new building downtown. In April I accidentally got stuck on a balcony and had to go through someones apartment. The feeling is vastly different now than three months ago. Fear was prevalent; our world felt like it was in mortal danger. An infection lurked on every corner.  Now fear is still there, still prevalent, it’s changed sources.

Many wonderful people I know fear the government. They fear society and everything that has been built and created over the past two hundred, or even two thousand years. People are restless and suspicious. Do we know anyone with covid? Is it real? Is it a hoax? Yet the reports from other parts of the world verify it is very real, and it is still out there. Our good friends and neighbours to the south are swallowing themselves up in chaos. Fear and division have taken control.

As we enter phase three, there is hope. Hope that a vaccine may be coming within months. Yet fear still exists and runs rampant. I fear that so many people have bought into the theory of vaccines being bad we may end up stuck at phase three for a long time. A vaccine will do no good if no one wants to take it. I am not afraid of an insidious plot by a so-called deep state. I am afraid of our society suffering because we can’t open back up due to fear.

Fear is the worst four-letter word in our vocabulary. I often think back to the litany of fear from Dune, my favourite book growing up:

“I will not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass through me. When the fear has gone, there shall be nothing. Only I will remain.”

If we can defeat fear we can thrive as a society. Without fear, love will remain.
