May 14, 2023 Happy Mothers Day

Published by Victor Barr on

To all mothers everywhere, I hope you had a fantastic day. A day filled with love and connection.

I lost my mother just over a year ago and lost my mom thirty-two years before that. At least I was lucky enough to have two mothers in my life. My adopted mom passed away when I was nineteen years old. She was only fifty-three, way too young. Then seventeen years later I met my biological mom. I had the great fortune of establishing a bond and connection with the woman who gave birth to me.

My Mother made one of the most significant sacrifices anyone could make. At the tender age of seventeen, she knew she was too young to raise a child. So she gave me up and let me go. I can’t imagine how tough that decision was to make. It is a decision I was able to thank her for. I gained so much from meeting her and getting to know her.

Then one day we got the call. She had cancer. It was tough for me to accept. I kept thinking she would beat it. I held out hope until we knew there was no going back. At least we got to say our goodbyes.

Unlike my adopted mom – I never got to say goodbye, I never saw her heart attack coming. One day she was in her usual spot in front of the sink and the next morning she was gone. No goodbye and no thought of second chances.

I didn’t realize I would have a second chance until I met Louise. It was a moment I will always cherish, meeting my birth mother and gaining a connection I didn’t know I was missing until it was there.

But again she was gone too soon. Too young.

Happy Mother’s Day is a tough thing for me now. I greet the day with melancholic trepidation. It is tempered by the fact my wife still has her mom. And she is eighty-nine years young.

Sometimes we never know how much time we are given on this plane of existence. Some get fifty-three years, others, sixty-six, and the lucky ones have eighty-nine and counting.

No matter what make this Mother’s Day special to the moms in your life. You never know how long they will be around.

More importantly, make every day a special one for the woman who brought you into the world. Share the love and connection every second of every day.
