April 23

March 23 we closed the condo at Big White and prepared to leave the mountain for the last time.  That was not the way we thought the season would end. We were having one of the best ski seasons in memory. Over 300 cm of snow base, I had 42 days on skis and there was so much more to come. Then it ended.

So much has changed in that lifetime that was only a month. At that time we thought it couldn’t last that long, A few weeks, maybe a month and things would calm down. Now the new normal has set in and things have calmed down, sort of. Now we look for normal in a world that is far from normal. Many people are out of work and many more are struggling with mental health issues. We embrace the positives and look for the silver linings.

Tom Brady signed a 50 million dollar contract this spring. He is now joined by his buddy Rob Gronkowski for 10 million dollars. What is the relevance of paying a man a lifetime of wealth to play a game? Will they even play this year? Is this new world order going to change all that? The people that really do the work, will they be paid a fraction of the money these entertainers and athletes are paid? Change only comes slowly over time or suddenly by force. It will be interesting to see the result of this forced change.

I look back at my entries from those early days, fear mixed with hope. Love will see us through. Love of ourselves, each other and mother earth. I am grateful for that love, the connection we have with each other and our neighours. I look back at days before that and remember times of excitement, of powder mornings and fresh tracks. Still surreal that it all came to a sudden end.

Now we move forward and adapt. We will continue to live, to love and to laugh. It is all we can do.
